About

Careers

Preparing our learners for their future is integral to our all that we do at Thriftwood. Our goal is to equip our students with the necessary skills to pursue further education, internships, and employment opportunities, as we aim to prepare them for successful careers.

The following are examples of provider access opportunities that may be facilitated by Thriftwood and available to both KS4 and KS5 students:

  • Careers Fairs: External providers may be invited to attend careers fairs, where they can set up stalls and interact with students to provide information about their specialist education offerings.
  • Guest Speakers: Providers may be invited to deliver presentations or workshops to students, focusing on specific subject areas, industries, or career pathways.
  • Taster Sessions: External providers may offer taster sessions or workshops, giving students the opportunity to experience their courses or programs in a practical, hands-on manner.
  • Work Experience and Internships: Providers may collaborate with the school to offer work experience placements or internships for students, providing valuable real-world experience and insight into specific industries or sectors.
  • Information Evenings: Providers may be invited to participate in information evenings, where parents and students can learn more about the range of specialist education opportunities available.

The Careers support at Thriftwood incorporates information, services and providers which are relevant to the specific cognitive and communication needs of our students. With such a range of needs, abilities and future ambitions at Thriftwood this guidance is varied and relates to Day Centres, further education providers, work experience and supported employment.

We offer real life ‘work’ experiences for our students through our business and enterprise curriculum, special internal work placements if applicable and visits to a variety of local employers.

We follow the Gatsby Benchmarks and student progress towards this is recorded on Compass Plus.

Liane Lindo, is the college PSHE, transition and events coordinator. She attends meetings at Transition points at college, provides families with information and support around the local offer and how to access educational providers, Day Centre provision and supported employment opportunities, and supports students on transition visits.

The college organises a bi-annual Transitions event where local Post-16 Further Education providers, local employers and volunteering and support agencies have the opportunity to meet, discuss, make contact and share their offer to students and families.

We also keep in contact with our school leavers and keep a record of past pupils their achievements, employment and pathways.
