World Book Day

World Book Day

We have had a busy few weeks at Thriftwood College celebrating World Book Day.

The pictures from our Extreme Reading competition were fantastic, with staff and students getting involved throughout college.

A Key Stage 4 class enjoyed a trip to a local graveyard to take spooky pictures of themselves reading which linked in with their work on ‘Gothic Literature’.  A Key Stage 5 class went to the Osea Island Causeway to see the inspiring landscape which featured in the film ‘The Woman in Black’.  Students took the opportunity to take photos of themselves reading while they were there.

Last week we had a visit from Hannah, a local storyteller.  Her brilliant stories engaged the whole college throughout the day. Ross from Key Stage 4 said after the performance that he had an absolutely brilliant time and that he really loves stories. Chloe from Key Stage 5 described the experience as “full of emotion”!

Finally, we will be undertaking a sponsored read across college to raise money for sets of reading books for each class.  Students with be asked to read for a set amount of time – suggested 20 minutes – and ask friends and family to sponsor them to read quietly, or out loud, for that time.

We are really enjoying getting stuck in to Essex Year of Reading 2022.
